Many students find they would like to switch to another major. You are allowed to change your mind as long as you complete the requirements for the new major. This switch might require you to stay in school longer.

What Is a Minor?

In addition to your major, you may want to concentrate in a second area because it interests you or because it helps you in your major field of study. However, you may not want to complete all the major requirements needed to major in this other field.

Many colleges provide opportunities to minor in subjects. You still need to complete certain requirements, but they are fewer; for instance, six courses instead of ten. Suppose you decide to major in Spanish. You may also be interested in Hispanic music or drama. In that case, you might choose to major in Spanish and minor in theater.

What Are Electives?

In addition to required courses, you will be able to take other courses that you get to choose. Courses you elect to take—which you are not required to take—are called electives. They provide opportunities for you to take additional courses in your major, courses taught by a particularly noted professor, or courses just for fun. Students can also use electives to meet requirements for their minor or for a second major.
