A new dining hall, a starkly modern building, has multi-story windows with pretty views of the alumni walk and the trees on campus. This new and imposing student center has supplanted Memorial Commons in Chase Hall, which was the old student center and dining hall, where everyone ate together.

Bates College is located in the Lewiston area, about 35 miles north of Portland. These are former mill-towns that grew on the banks of the river during the industrial revolution. Although most students stay on campus during the weekend, there are restaurants and malls within a short distance where students buy top quality winter clothing.
